What should I wear to the appointment?

Come in comfy clothes which I’ll ask you to remove depending on the area(s) included in your treatment.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

Accepted Answer

I will ask you to remove clothing only as far as you feel comfortable and I do not offer any massage therapies where underwear is removed, so please make sure you are wearing some! I will leave the room while you’re undressing and will provide towels and blankets to cover you during the massage. There are some massages that work well if you want to remain clothed, so discuss this with me before you book.

Question 3

I’m not sure which massage or therapy to choose. Can you help me?

If you want a relaxing – or invigorating – full body massage, go for Swedish, which can be as gentle or as firm as you like. Deep Tissue Massage targets chronic muscle tension, usually focussing on your back, neck, shoulders and legs, but deep tissue techniques can also be applied to your arms, hands and feet – just ask and I can tailor your treatment. Aromatherapy Massage enhances your experience through essential oils selected for your physical and emotional needs. If you prefer to remain clothed, you could go for Indian Head Massage or Thai Stretch Massage. My Remedial Back Massage addresses back pain, while my Chair Massage offers a quick tension relief for those on the go or for those unable to get onto or lie down on the therapy couch. How should I prepare for a massage or therapy?

Accepted Answer

Before a massage, it’s best to avoid eating a heavy meal. You should also drink plenty of water to help flush toxins moved around by the massage. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing if your massage does not require undressing. Please also ensure to turn off you phone during the session to help you relax and make the most of your session.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

Your treatment will take place in the garden studio, so please wait outside the side gate (not the front door) and I will show you to the therapy room at the start time of your appointment. We will go through the consultation form that you will have completed by email, and we’ll have a quick chat about what you would like to get out of your treatment, how much pressure to apply and any questions you might have. I will leave the room while you get undressed, help you get comfortable using cushions and blankets on my return, take you through a short guided meditation to help you get into the zone, and quietly allow you to enjoy the relaxing music, aromas and touch therapy.

Is massage painful?

Accepted Answer

You may have some discomfort during your massage, depending on the area I’m working on, any pre-existing pains, and whether I’m using too much pressure for you. You can always ask me to use less pressure at any time if it’s too uncomfortable. It’s important to relax into your massage to get the most out of it and you can’t do that if you’re tensing up! It’s not unusual to feel some soreness after a massage if you’ve had firm/deep pressure. This is due to a release of lactic acid in the muscles, but it doesn’t last long. Drink lots of water afterwards and take it easy.

Is it ok to fall asleep during my massage?

When it comes to massage frequently asked questions, this is a common one. It’s normal to fall asleep during a massage. You might be feeling stressed and sleep-deprived, so falling asleep is quite common once you’re in a relaxed state. There’s zero judgment from me if you snore, in fact I take it as a compliment that you’re relaxed enough to fall asleep and I won’t mention it. Drooling is common, especially if you’re on your front, so just ask if you need a tissue and I’ll be glad to grab one for you.

I’m self-conscious about _____. What should I do?

We all have parts of our body we’re self-conscious about. Some areas you may be concerned about are:

Your weight
Unwanted body hair
Scars
Acne or other skin blemishes

Please don’t let this stop you from getting help from a massage therapist. If you’re sensitive about a particular area, ask them to avoid it. You can also opt for a fully clothed massage. Whatever your concerns, know that I am friendly, supportive and judgment-free. I’m also an ex-nurse, so there isn’t much I haven’t seen before, I promise you!

Can I talk or ask questions during my treatment, or should I stay quiet?

Accepted Answer

I start every session by taking you through a quick guided meditation, encouraging you to focus on your breath to help activate your parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest mode”) to help you relax and focus on enjoying your treatment. The more relaxed you are, the more pliable your muscles will be, and the more you will get out of your massage. However, if you prefer to chat during your massage session or if you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to speak up. But equally, don’t feel you have to make conversation – this is your time to close your eyes and switch off.

I am pregnant, can I still have a massage?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can still have a massage while pregnant, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Prenatal massage is specifically tailored to the needs of pregnant women and can be very beneficial, helping to relieve aches and pains in parts of the body where pregnant women experience stress like the back and legs.
